Teaching jobs in Egypt: work permits, salary and tax (2026)

Teaching jobs in Egypt for foreigners: the 2025 Labour Law work permit, residence after arrival, Arabic rules at international schools, teacher salary and tax.

General information, not legal, tax or immigration advice. Rules change; check the official sources linked here or ask a qualified adviser.

Teaching jobs in Egypt for foreigners are mainly at international and private schools in Greater Cairo, and the legal steps are the same for everyone: the school applies for a work permit under Egypt’s new Labour Law, and you apply for a residence permit after you arrive. International school packages are usually quoted in pounds sterling or US dollars with housing, flights and medical cover. Egypt taxes employment income at rates from 0% to 27.5%, so always ask whether the salary in your offer is before or after tax.

This guide is for teachers from any country. Egypt’s official websites for the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Education could not be opened from outside the country when we checked in October 2026, so parts of this guide rely on summaries by law firms, business media and the UK government. We say where that is the case. Rules change, so treat this as general information, not legal or tax advice, and ask your school.

Where the teaching jobs in Egypt are

On Teacher Jobs World on 16 October 2026 there were 116 teaching jobs in Egypt. The largest clusters were 6th of October City and Cairo, both in Greater Cairo. The employer with the most ads was Egypt Education Platform, with 109 jobs in our October 2026 report. Every job on the board links to the school’s own page.

How many international schools are there? Counts vary a lot with the definition. A 2020 study by the Egyptian Center for Strategic Studies, using the Ministry of Education’s school directory, counted 795 international schools, up from 589 in 2017 and 168 in 2011, with most in Cairo, Giza and Alexandria (ECSS). That figure uses the Ministry’s broad definition, which includes local schools that teach an international programme. Schools that hire foreign teachers on expatriate packages are a much smaller group.

The work permit under the 2025 Labour Law

Egypt’s new Labour Law (Law No. 14 of 2025) took effect in September 2025. The Cairo Governorate reported that the Ministry of Labour recorded more than 7,000 violations of the foreign work permit rules in its first 17 days (Cairo Governorate). In other words, enforcement is real.

The rules for foreign workers are in Ministerial Decision No. 279 of 2025. We could not open the official text. A September 2026 summary by an Egyptian law firm says (Mondaq):

Topic What the summary says
Who applies The employer
Validity Usually one year or less; renewals filed at least 2 months before expiry
Cap on foreign staff Foreign staff may not exceed 10% of the Egyptian staff at the establishment, with exceptions for justified need
Documents Passport and photos, the employment contract, authenticated qualifications (with an Arabic translation if needed), proof of 3 years of relevant experience where the general rule applies, a security clearance and a medical certificate including an HIV test
Residence vs work A residence permit alone does not allow you to work
Penalties Fines of EGP 20,000 to 100,000 per worker

Another summary describes the 10% cap as a share of the total workforce, not of Egyptian staff (Safeguard Global). Either way, a large international school with many Egyptian staff has room to hire foreign teachers, but a small school may not. Ask how many permits the school holds and whether yours is already approved.

The 3-year experience rule is important for new teachers. Ask the school whether it applies to you and whether an exception is possible.

Residence permit: after you arrive

The UK government’s guide for British people living in Egypt says residence permits for work can only be applied for after you arrive in Egypt, at an office of the Passports, Emigration and Nationality Administration (the main one is in Abbassia, Cairo), and that processing can take weeks. It also says work permits need security clearance, a medical certificate with an HIV test and proof of your qualifications (GOV.UK). These steps apply to teachers of any nationality.

In practice your school’s HR team usually tells you which visa to enter on and takes you through the residence steps. Keep copies of every receipt, because a receipt can be your proof of a pending application.

Do foreign teachers need a licence in Egypt?

As of May 2024, foreign teachers did not need an Egyptian teaching licence, and the Ministry’s international education department received lists of the foreign teachers at each school. A proposal to license foreign teachers through the Teachers Syndicate was under discussion (Enterprise). We found no sign that it has been adopted, but check with your school.

Arabic, religion and national studies at international schools

International schools in Egypt teach their foreign curriculum alongside compulsory Egyptian subjects. A Ministry decision of September 2024, applied from September 2025, requires Arabic from KG to Grade 12, religion from Grades 1 to 12, social studies in Grades 4 to 9 and history in Grades 10 to 12 (Enterprise). Local teachers teach these subjects.

For you, this means a slightly shorter week for the international curriculum and a school with a large Egyptian teaching staff, which also affects the foreign staff cap.

Teacher salary in Egypt

There is no official salary survey for international school teachers in Egypt, so we do not quote an average. What schools advertise:

  • Uppingham Cairo advertised its 2024 early career teacher programme at £28,000 a year, noting a 25% tax rate, plus accommodation, return flights, healthcare, meals, transport and school places for 2 children (Tes). That listing has closed.
  • Other British schools in Cairo describe their salaries as “tax-free” and list housing or a housing allowance, an annual flight, medical cover, tuition for teachers’ children and an end-of-contract bonus.

“Tax-free” in an offer usually means the school pays the Egyptian tax for you and quotes a net figure. That is our reading, not a rule, so ask the school to confirm in writing.

Some jobs, especially for teachers hired locally, are paid in Egyptian pounds. If a salary is quoted in pounds, check its value against the currency’s recent movements and compare it with the cost of housing you would pay yourself.

Income tax for employees in Egypt

PwC’s tax summary, reviewed in August 2026, gives these annual brackets for employment income (PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries):

Taxable income (EGP a year) Rate
Up to 40,000 0%
40,000 to 55,000 10%
55,000 to 70,000 15%
70,000 to 200,000 20%
200,000 to 400,000 22.5%
400,000 to 1,200,000 25%
Over 1,200,000 27.5%

There is also an annual personal exemption of EGP 20,000. A teacher on an expatriate package will usually be in the top bracket for most of their pay. This is why the net or gross question matters so much.

Teaching jobs in Egypt for foreigners: step by step

  1. Choose an established school. Larger schools have more room under the foreign staff cap and more experience with permits.
  2. Ask about the work permit: who applies, how long it takes, and whether the 3-year experience rule applies to you.
  3. Prepare documents early: degree certificates and teaching qualifications authenticated for use in Egypt, a police certificate and your CV with dates of experience.
  4. Check the contract: salary currency, net or gross, housing, flights, medical cover and notice period.
  5. Arrive and apply for residence with the school’s help. Do not start teaching before your work permit is approved.
  6. Keep receipts for all applications.

Never pay a recruiter for a job offer. See teacher recruitment scams. Hiring for an August start often begins the autumn before; see the international school hiring season.
