Teaching assistant jobs at international schools: how to get one with no teaching experience (2026)

How to get a teaching assistant job at an international school with no experience: what TA, LSA and EAL roles ask for, pay, visas and where to apply.

Yes, you can get a teaching assistant (TA) job at an international school with no teaching experience. Many TA ads ask for no degree or teaching qualification: a Hong Kong school says school experience is “preferred, but not essential”. You do need good English, some experience with children (volunteering counts) and a clean criminal record check. The catch is the visa. Most TA jobs offer no visa sponsorship, many ask for the right to work in the country already, and they rarely come with housing or flights.

This guide quotes real job ads on school career sites and the published rules of regulators, checked on 25 October 2026. Ads change often, so read the current one before you apply.

What a teaching assistant does

A teaching assistant supports a qualified teacher. The UK’s National Careers Service lists the usual tasks: preparing materials, setting up the classroom, working with individual students and small groups, recording their progress, looking after children who are upset or unwell, and leading activities with help from the teacher (National Careers Service).

The job titles, and how they differ

Schools use many names for similar jobs. These are the main types.

Title What it usually means
Teaching assistant, teacher assistant, classroom assistant, learning assistant General support for a class teacher. Abu Dhabi’s regulator, ADEK, treats “Classroom Assistant” as another name for teacher assistant.
Educational assistant (EA) The name English Schools Foundation (ESF) schools in Hong Kong use for a TA.
Learning support assistant (LSA), inclusion assistant, SEN TA Supports students with special educational needs (SEN). A Taaleem school in Dubai describes its LSA as supporting “the named student” against their Individual Education Plan (IEP) targets.
1:1 assistant, shadow teacher Works with one student all day. ADEK calls this an “Individual Assistant” and lists “Shadow Teacher” as another name.
EAL assistant Helps students who are learning English as an additional language (EAL). St Andrews International School Bangkok calls them English Learning Support Assistants.
Early years assistant Works in nursery or kindergarten classes.
Higher level teaching assistant (HLTA) A senior TA. In England, TAs can take a course to become an HLTA once they have experience.

What schools ask for

There is no single standard. Each school, and in some places the regulator, sets the minimum.

Some ads ask for no degree and little experience

These ads were open on school career sites on 25 October 2026:

  • Taaleem, Jumeira Baccalaureate School, Dubai (LSA). Education: “Minimum High School education in English and Maths, preferred but not essential”. Experience: “Experience or aptitude for working with students with special educational needs, previous teaching or teaching assistant experience preferred” (Taaleem).
  • ISP, Smart Vision School, Dubai (TA). The essentials are “Experience working with children in an educational or childcare setting”, good communication and teamwork. Previous TA or LSA experience is only “desirable”. The ad lists no degree (ISP).
  • ESF, Clearwater Bay School, Hong Kong (EA). “Relevant experiences in schools is preferred, but not essential”, plus “At least 2 years GCSE (pass A-C) or equivalent in Maths and English” (ESF).
  • Inspired, Barcelona (TA). “A High School Diploma or equivalent qualification” and experience with children aged 3 to 10. A degree in education is “desirable” (Inspired).
  • Inspired, Milan (early years TA). “Relevant childcare or education qualifications are desirable but not essential” (Inspired).

Other ads ask for as much as a teacher

Some schools use the TA title for jobs that need a degree and years of experience:

  • ISP, Tenby Setia Eco Park, Malaysia. “A Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in education is a prerequisite” and “a minimum of 3 years of relevant teaching experience” (ISP).
  • ISP, Durham School for Girls, Doha. A bachelor’s degree or diploma in teaching, at least 2 years of teaching experience and the “Required teaching certification for Qatar MOEHE”, the education ministry (ISP).
  • GEMS International School Cairo. Its teaching assistant ad says candidates “are expected to have a current license/certification in their home country with a minimum of 3 years full-time teaching experience” (Egypt Education Platform).

So read each ad. A title that says “assistant” does not always mean an entry-level job.

What the regulator says

Some education regulators set a minimum for assistants.

Abu Dhabi (ADEK). ADEK’s Staff Eligibility Policy (version 1.3, September 2024) sets these minimums (ADEK):

ADEK role Minimum
Teacher assistant (also “Classroom Assistant”) QFE 4 certificate, which ADEK defines as Certificate 4 or the secondary school certificate (Grade 12). No experience needed.
Inclusion assistant (SEN) One of: a QFE 5 certificate in special education; a QFE 4 certificate and 1 year of experience; or a QFE 4 certificate and 20 hours of training within the first year of the job.
Individual assistant (shadow teacher) A recommendation for appointment by the head of inclusion or a senior leader.

Dubai (KHDA). KHDA’s technical guide sets minimum qualifications for “teaching staff”, which it defines as people “appointed in a formal teaching role”. We found no separate minimum for teaching assistants in it (KHDA technical guide).

English, and sometimes a second language

Many ads ask for fluent English, and some set a level. St Andrews International School Bangkok asks its EAL assistants for “CEFR Level C1 / IELTS Band 6.5+ or equivalent” and experience teaching EAL or English as a foreign language (Nord Anglia).

Many TA jobs also want the local language, because TAs talk to young children and parents. The same Bangkok school asks its SEN assistants for “Fluency in Thai, English and familiarity with Thai culture” (Nord Anglia).

Criminal record checks and safeguarding

Expect a criminal record check whatever your experience. On 25 October 2026, 126 of the 156 teaching assistant ads on Teacher Jobs World mentioned a background check, criminal record check, police check or similar (teaching assistant jobs). Examples:

  • ISP asks for criminal background checks “covering the previous 10 years’ employment history” (ISP).
  • St Andrews Bangkok asks for “a ten-year criminal record check” and at least two references (Nord Anglia).
  • ESF lists “ICPC, SCRC, and other international background checks as appropriate” (ESF).

The ICPC is the UK’s International Child Protection Certificate. British schools overseas must ask for one from anyone who “has ever worked, or currently works in the UK” (BSO standards). Order your police certificates early.

Few ads ask you to hold a safeguarding certificate before you start: only 1 of the 156 TA ads on our board mentioned previous safeguarding training. But interviews include safeguarding questions. See our interview questions guide.

Qualifications that help when you have no experience

Many of the jobs above need no TA qualification. But a recognised one shows you know the basics, and its placement gives you the experience ads ask for.

UK levels. Schools that follow the British curriculum often use UK qualification levels. Level 2 includes GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C). Level 3 includes A levels and level 3 certificates and diplomas (GOV.UK). The National Careers Service says each school in England sets its own entry requirements, “though you’ll usually need GCSEs grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) in English and maths” (National Careers Service).

NCFE CACHE Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning. This is a common UK TA qualification. NCFE’s factsheet (version 1.1, June 2023) gives three sizes (NCFE):

Size Guided learning hours Placement
Award 85 Not needed
Certificate 250 You must work or be on placement in a school or college. NCFE recommends 100 hours.
Diploma 380 NCFE recommends 200 hours in total.

Learners must be at least 16. NCFE sets no other entry requirements, but each college sets its own. The Certificate covers child development, safeguarding, and communication and professional relationships.

Volunteering. The National Careers Service calls volunteering “an excellent way to get experience of working with children and young people” (National Careers Service).

For EAL assistant jobs. Some EAL ads ask for experience teaching English as a foreign language. A TEFL course with observed teaching practice is one way to get it. Our guide to TEFL, CELTA and DELTA compares the certificates.

Pay and benefits

Most TA ads do not show the pay. On 25 October 2026, only 5 of the 156 teaching assistant ads on Teacher Jobs World showed a pay figure (teaching assistant jobs). These are examples from employers’ own ads:

Employer and job Pay in the ad
La Scuola International School, San Francisco (preschool assistant teacher) US$30 to US$38 per hour (La Scuola)
British Council, Taiwan (young learner assistant at a language centre, 16 hours a week) NT$196 per hour (British Council)

For comparison, the National Careers Service gives £19,000 for a starter to £26,000 for an experienced TA in England. It adds that TAs work term-time only and that advertised pay is often the full-time equivalent, so actual pay depends on your hours (National Careers Service).

We found no published TA pay figures we could cite for the UAE or Asia. Ask for the salary, hours, medical cover and holiday pay before you accept.

The visa question: local hire or international hire?

This is the biggest difference between TA jobs and many teacher jobs. Schools that recruit teachers from abroad often help with the visa. For TA jobs, that is rare.

Our own data shows this. On 25 October 2026:

  • our teaching assistant jobs page showed 0% of its 156 jobs with visa sponsorship;
  • none of the 156 TA ads mentioned housing, accommodation or flights;
  • our apply from abroad page listed 27 jobs, 10 of them with visa sponsorship, and none of the 27 was a TA job.

How to tell from the ad

Look for these lines. Each one means the school expects you to have the right to work already:

  • “Local hire” in the title. Nord Anglia’s school in Tashkent advertises an “EYFS Teacher’s Assistant (Local hire)” (Nord Anglia).
  • “Must be a permanent resident or have a valid visa.” ESF says applicants “must be a permanent Hong Kong resident or possess a valid visa to work in Hong Kong” (ESF).
  • “Right to work in [country].” Inspired’s Barcelona school asks for “The legal right to work in Spain” (Inspired). The British Council in Taiwan says the “Candidate must have right to work in Taiwan” (British Council).
  • “EU passport.” Inspired’s school in Como asks applicants to “only apply if you have Qualified Teacher Status, are an EU passport holder, or already have a valid visa that enables you to work in Italy” (Inspired).

If an ad says nothing about visas, housing or flights, ask the school before you spend time on the application. Do not assume a package.

So TA jobs suit people who can already work in the country, including partners of teachers where the country lets them work. Our guide for teaching couples suggests asking whether the school hires partners as TAs. If you need a visa, look at assistant programmes with a visa route, such as JET in Japan and Spain’s language assistants. Never pay for a job offer: see teacher recruitment scams.

Where to find teaching assistant jobs

On 25 October 2026, Teacher Jobs World listed 156 teaching assistant jobs at 20 schools and school groups in 29 countries (teaching assistant jobs).

Employer TA jobs
International Schools Partnership (ISP) 69
Inspired Education 16
Nord Anglia Education 15
Egypt Education Platform 12
Taaleem 9
English Schools Foundation (ESF) 8
Country TA jobs
United Arab Emirates 27 (18 of them in Dubai)
United States 16

These are only the schools on our board, not the whole market. Every job comes from the school’s own careers site, and the apply button takes you there. You can also search the groups’ career sites directly: ISP, Inspired, Nord Anglia, Taaleem and ESF. Some TA jobs are for an “immediate start”, so check often or set up a job alert.

From teaching assistant to teacher

A TA job is a good way to find out if teaching suits you. It does not make you a qualified teacher by itself.

  • You need a degree. Get Into Teaching, the UK government service, says you need a bachelor’s degree in any subject to train to teach in England (Get Into Teaching). Dubai’s KHDA asks primary and subject teachers for a bachelor’s degree too (KHDA).
  • England’s apprenticeship is for residents. The teacher degree apprenticeship is open to teaching assistants, but you must have lived in England for the last 3 years or more (Get Into Teaching).
  • Training while you work abroad. If you have a degree, you can work as a TA while you take a teaching qualification. Not all of them lead to qualified teacher status (QTS). Our guide to the PGCE, iPGCE and iQTS explains which ones do.

A step-by-step plan

  1. Start where you can already work. List the countries where you have the right to work.
  2. Get experience with children. Volunteer in a school, coach a sport or tutor, and ask for a reference.
  3. Consider a short qualification, such as a Level 3 TA certificate with a school placement, or a TEFL course if you want EAL work.
  4. Order your police certificates. Many schools want checks for every country you lived in during the last 10 years, plus an ICPC if you have worked in the UK.
  5. Write a short CV that puts your work with children first. See our CV and cover letter guide.
  6. Read every ad for three things: the qualification, the language and the right-to-work line. Then ask about pay and terms in writing before you accept.

Rules on qualifications, police checks and visas change. Check the regulator’s and the school’s own pages before you apply. This guide is general information, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I be a teaching assistant abroad with no experience?

Yes, but it is easiest in a country where you can already work. Some ads ask only for school-level English and maths and experience with children, which can come from volunteering. Others ask for a degree and years of teaching experience. Most TA jobs do not include a visa, housing or flights.

Do I need a degree to be a teaching assistant at an international school?

Often not. A Taaleem LSA ad in Dubai and an ESF ad in Hong Kong ask for school-level qualifications, and Abu Dhabi’s ADEK sets the secondary school certificate as the minimum for a teacher assistant. But some schools in Malaysia, Qatar and Egypt ask TAs for a degree or diploma and 2 to 3 years of teaching experience.

Do international schools sponsor visas for teaching assistants?

Rarely. On 25 October 2026, none of the 156 teaching assistant ads on Teacher Jobs World offered visa sponsorship or mentioned housing or flights. Many say you must already have the right to work in the country.
