GEMS International School of Somabay – Immediate Start

We are looking for a dedicated ELL & Learning Support Teacher to join our team at GEMS International School of Somabay.

The role is to help English language learners in Grades 1–9 develop the English skills they need to access the American curriculum and succeed in class, while providing structured support for students with dyslexia, autism, or other learning needs when required.

The successful candidate will work closely with the SEN Counselor, teachers, and families to ensure students receive appropriate and effective support.

Requirements

ELL Assessment & Placement

  • Screen new and existing students for English language needs using WIDA-aligned tools, and place them at the right support level.
  • Keep an ELL register with each student’s proficiency level, targets, support schedule and progress.
  • Reassess language proficiency each semester and recommend when students can exit support.

ELL Teaching (Grades 1–9)

  • Plan and teach small-group pull-out and in-class (push-in) sessions in speaking, listening, reading and writing.
  • Teach the academic vocabulary and language students need for English, Math, Science and Social Studies.
  • Co-plan with homeroom and subject teachers so that classroom tasks are accessible to ELL students.
  • Maintain planning, attendance and progress records on Toddle.

Dyslexia & Literacy Support (as needed)

  • Deliver structured, multisensory literacy interventions (phonics, decoding, spelling, fluency) for students with dyslexia or reading difficulties.
  • Use the school’s dyslexia-support platform and programs, and track progress against intervention goals.

Distinguish between language-acquisition needs and possible learning difficulties and refer concerns to the SEN Counselor.

Autism & Additional Needs Support (as needed)

    • Support autistic students and students with other additional needs using visual supports, clear routines and structured, predictable sessions.
    • Help students with communication, social interaction and self-regulation in line with their IEP.
    • Work closely with LSAs, class teachers and families so strategies are used consistently.

IEPs, Collaboration & Reporting

    • Contribute language and literacy goals to IEPs and support plans led by the SEN Counselor, in the approved school format and by agreed deadlines.
    • Advise teachers on accommodations, scaffolds and differentiation, and share resources.
    • Report ELL and intervention progress to teachers, leadership and parents each semester.
    • Refer any wellbeing or safeguarding concern to the SEN Counselor or DSL immediately.
